As the winner of the tour de France, cyclist Floyd Landis , is now being tested positive for testosterone, as is the Olympic 100 m champion Justin Gatin, the debate is again heating up to see if we are making any progress on the war against the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport. The sports organisation are becoming better at testing, and the penalties for being caught are harsher (I believe Gatin is up for a life long ban) and still the debate rages on. Some people still feel that certain drugs should be allowed. Other people, myself included, worry about genetic manipulation. Interesting piece in the discussion section of the Guardian entitled "Is sports winning its war against drugs".
Drugs in sport seems to be out of control. Individual sportsmen and women don't seem to have the personal resources necessary to refuse doping. Even sporting heroes, men and women who've made a name for themselves as 'clean' athletes one year are caught out the next. Both Gatlin and Landis were noted for their anti-drugs rhetoric.Personally I think that sport, at the grassroots, day-to-day competitive level, probably lacks an ethical framework all together. Individual competitors are encouraged to think only of winning, to become competitive monomaniacs. Top sporting figures (I'm no expert - this is just my opinion based on recent media) seem to be one-dimensional, hyper-competitive people for whom there is no bigger picture, no context.Reasserting ethical thinking in sport will be a tall order, perhaps requiring the creation of new institutions, new obligatory educational frameworks, new ways of being. Tricky.
