Johns Hopkins Medicine issued a very interesting press release on an expert discussion of the use of human stem cells in ape and monkey brains. It is clear that if stem cells show promise in treating diseases of the brain, they are going to have to be tested on animals. Which raises the possibility of generating a human-like mind in a primate's body. Dr. Ruth Faden, director fo the Phoebe R. Berman Bioethics Institute for Cell Engineering and Dr. Guy McKhann of Hopkins' Zanvyl Krieger Mind/Brain Institute were co-organizers of the panel, and attempted to complement the recent report on stem cell research by the National Academy of Sciences. Some of the recommendations were that cognitive and emotional changes are least likely to occur in species distantly related to humans, such as macaques, rather than chimpanzees and other great apes. They recommend that specific ethical oversight be applied to these type of studies, and to propose studies that monitor behavioral, emotional and cognitive changes in the primates.
