An article in the Washington Post by Jeffrey Bimbaum entitled "Promise to shore up ethics loses speed" announces that following the Jack Abramoff prolitical corruption scandal progress on altering the rules between lawmakers and lobbyists has slowed down. In fact, in the end we might end up with very little reform - mostly a bit more transparency, and no new rules. Plus ça change... What is it with politicians, that they must curry favour to get elected, and then the whole circus continues... If politicians have forgotten how people think of all this deal making and horse trading, then I suggest mandatory ethics refresher courses at regular intervals ! Not only basic rules, but sensitization programs to identify ethical issues during decision making process. Companies are hiring ethics officers - what about the US government ! How about getting some professional independent people to look into wrong doing and take the partisan politics out of the equation.
