About this blog

  • Thinking Ethics was a project launched in Geneva to foster the debate about ethics. A few friends, fed up with only reading about abuses in the media, decided to hold a forward-looking seminar on five subjects: ethics and performance, ethics and knowledge, ethics and consciousness, ethics and disobedience and ethics in real time. If moral has to do with right and wrong, then ethics is its application in society. We believe that people need to talk about the subject to determine the level of ethics they want. The book Thinking Ethics, a result of the seminar, is to start the discussion. This blog is a contribution to the conversation.

Buying an "ethical brand" company

There seems to have been some uproar when HSBC bought the UK Cooperative Bank. As if they were purchasing themselves a good conscience. I think it is rather normal that larger entities buy up niche players, and instead of all the hoopla about HSBC getting access to this new channel, think of the wonderful opportunity of influencing a much larger segment of business. Comment from the editor - got this one wrong - the uproar was about rumors that HSBC... the deal has not gone through, should have read "uproar about HSBC buying..."

Not sure I saw this one. Are you sure HSBC has bought the Coop Bank? I can't find anything about this online. Could you provide more information?

As a customer I might have expected some info, but the web seems very silent indeed. Uproar? Not from where I'm standing.
