Is no game immune from cheating ? Does a monetary reward distort all fair competition ? Power, influence, money - or just measurement ? Perception and manipulation for ideological purposes might also be a factor, as with doctored photographs (see yesterday's posting), but why must people cheat ? What will it take to clean up any type of competition ? Cycling is particularly bad, with a large portion of amateur cyclists taking performance enhancing drugs - so it is not only for the money. And now it is becoming an issue in chess. Some players are sneaking more than peeks at chess-playing computer programs to help them with their moves. One player was found with a wireless earpiece during the World Open Tournament. The players are suspected of receiving help from computeres or from accomplices using computers.
