As usual, California is a trend setter. I always thought that animal rights was something the brits were great at (check out the bbc's very good ethics site on animal rights here), but now it is coming to the US.
Residents of the State of California will soon vote on Proposition 2 which intends to oblige farmers to give animals more space. Since California does not have pork or veal industries, it is mostly about henhouses (no, not that kind). Full article in the New York Times here.
The real issue is balancing the wll-intended initiative for animals against the negative consequences for people: the economics are not great - so either eggs will be more expensive or egg farmers will go out of business, or cheaper eggs will be imported from Mexico, where these rules will not apply.
