The French president Nicolas Sarkozy is taking advantage of the financial crisis to make good on a campaign promise - get rid of outrageous severance packages. He is promoting a bill to restrict the paying of golden parachutes and lucrative severance packages, even outside the banking industry. The pressure is so acute currently, that Axel Miller, the departing CEO of the Dexia bank has announced that he will not take his contractual severance entitlement. As there is widespread support for this in the French opinion, the bill is expected to pass in the next few weeks. More here
