About this blog

  • Thinking Ethics was a project launched in Geneva to foster the debate about ethics. A few friends, fed up with only reading about abuses in the media, decided to hold a forward-looking seminar on five subjects: ethics and performance, ethics and knowledge, ethics and consciousness, ethics and disobedience and ethics in real time. If moral has to do with right and wrong, then ethics is its application in society. We believe that people need to talk about the subject to determine the level of ethics they want. The book Thinking Ethics, a result of the seminar, is to start the discussion. This blog is a contribution to the conversation.

Morning Beth!

Ah! the never ending interplay between character and purpose. The same goes for bonuses. I couldn’t understand the purpose, not from the point of the employee but from the point of his Boss. The coin fell during one of my endless showers – see showers with 12 inch shower heads – a dream. We? no .., they are dealing with mountains of virtual money. The stuff is still lying everywhere around. The problem with virtual money is, it disappears in time meaning when the term expires it goes up in smoke. The game then is how to exchange this stuff into real money which makes for about 5 % of all money. The game - rules and players - are only known to a very few. This insight is being coined by way of bonuses. The game is - how much do I pay so as not to lose. From a strategist’s point of view it’s fully legitimate even though morally questionable. The same goes for the case Esser, (Mannesman deal to Vodafone). The case came to a standstill when the question was asked if a well paid manager needs an extra incentive to make the right decision. The game is always the same – on the field, in the boardroom or on the floor of the stockexchange. Augenmaß - is lacking.

best regards George

Winning the game is a good idea but winning the game that involves cheating is another story. Why not be a good player. It gets me so upset with this kind of story. :(
